Jane Porter on Romance Fiction and Women’s Fiction

I’m really excited to welcome Jane Porter to my blog today.  Jane is an author of romance novels with Harlequin Presents, but she also writes wonderful women’s fiction, about life, love and relationships with the various twists and turns.  In women’s fiction, the happy ever after (HEA) isn’t always a given, but there’s always that sense of having learnt something new about life and having grown in some way.  Jane has just released THE GOOD WIFE, the third book in her BRENNAN SISTERS TRILOGY, which I’m greatly enjoying right now.  So she’s come along to tell us a bit about the book.

You write wonderful romance and women’s fiction.  Which genre is your favourite?
I love both equally, to be honest.  I’ve always loved reading romance novels and I find a lot of pleasure in writing classic romances too.  My women’s fiction novels allow me the freedom to write the longer, deeper stories I’ve always wanted to write.  They inspire me because they deal with strong relationships and strong women.  Being able to switch between the two genres gives me a lot more freedom and keeps me inspired and happy with my job as a storyteller.  

How did you find time to write the Brennan series when you are writing romance fiction too?
I made time because I wanted to tell these stories.  It’s not a matter of writing them both at the same time but more about choice and a little planning.  I use my calendar, mapping out roughly when each book is due and set myself the deadlines to help me meet my goals.  It keeps me on track.  As for the actual writing, really, when I’m writing a story, the characters are in my head all the time and they want their story heard so it’s just a matter of sitting down and listening to them.

You’ve written books about the three Brennan sisters.  Any sign of a book about the Brennan sisteter in law? The brother’s wife, of course.
Yes, actually.  I really hope to write Cassandra and Tommy’s story one day and I also would love to write Brianna’s, Kit’s twin, story as well.  I am not ready to be done with the Brennans yet!

What’s the next project?
t’s a single title romance about a ranching family, for Montana Born Books, and the first book in the Shanahan Brothers series about rugged, gorgeous cowboys.  For those of you who’ve read y Harlequins, you may remember the Shanahan brothers briefly from Hollywood Husband, Contract Bride.  I’m loving every minute of writing and working on this project! 

 THE GOOD WIFE

Always considered the beauty of the family, the youngest Brennan sister, Sarah, remains deeply in love with her husband of ten years. Boone Walker, a professional baseball player, travels almost year-round while Sarah stays home and cares for their two children. Her love for her husband is bottomless—so much so that her sisters say it will end up hurting her.

Living apart most of the time makes life difficult, especially since Sarah often wonders whether Boone is sharing his bed with other women on the road, even though he swears he’s been true to her since his infidelity three years ago. While she wants to be happy and move forward in her life, Sarah constantly fears that Boone will break his promise. Now with Boone facing yet another career change, tension rises between the two, adding more stress to an already turbulent marriage. Emotionally exhausted, Sarah can’t cope with yet another storm. Now, she must either break free from the past and forgive Boone completely, or leave him behind and start anew . . .
