Meet author Mayank Sharma

Mayank Sharma is a computer engineering graduate with a post-graduate degree in business management. He works with a leading technology multinational company in Delhi. He has authored a number of articles and whitepapers on software technology and processes. In April 2014, an article of his was featured in Better Software magazine, published in Florida, USA. Writing become a passion of his when he observed how it can trigger the forces of change. He is gradually transforming from a “left-brained” writer to a “right-brained” writer. Besides writing, he has enjoyed sketching, painting, and making sculptures since childhood.

India is the fifth-largest economy in the world with the Gross Domestic Product growth at 7.1 percent. Contrarily, India ranks 118 out of 157 countries in the happiness index. The fact directed Mayank’s attention towards social problems of various types. Having travelled across continents and associated with people of diverse beliefs and values, he has become more curious about the social riddles curtailing liberties across societies. He penned his debut novel, The Princess of a Whorehouse, when he came across some real life incidents which touched his soul.

I asked author Mayank Sharma to share what inspired him to write this story. Here is his reply…..

For several days, I pondered the question that my thirteen-year-old daughter asked me about liberty and freedom to make life choices. It was the Midsummer festival season in northern Finland, when my wife and kids accompanied me for a leisure trip during my routine business visit to my office in Jyväskylä.During the summer months, the sun remains visible for the entire night, especially around the areas near to Arctic Circle. It was an amazing natural phenomena for my kids to watch as they visited that place for the first time.

It is a tradition for Finnish people to enjoy bonfires and bathe in saunas during the Midsummer celebrations. In a white night, my daughter and I strolled around a gorgeous lake, where children, women, and couples enjoyed the festivity. On our way back after midnight, we saw a few young girls, who were chirpily riding bicycles on cycling tracks. It was about one o’ clock, when we slowly walked on the pedestrian lane as the sun began to rise soon after it, somewhat hid behind the horizon for a few minutes. My daughter looked at my face innocently and murmured that perhaps these girls were not afraid to wander alone without restraint as there was no darkness at night. She wondered if this was the reason why a country like Finland was ranked fifth in the happiness index, whilst India, the fifth largest economy, was 118th in the rank. Her observation caught me by surprise. For quite some time, I was baffled by cross-cultural riddles. I did not want my daughter to get a deceptive notion that girls should grow up as men’s shadows in our society. It took me a while to explain her the fact that it is not the darkness of night, but it is the darkness of mind that steals girls’ fundamental rights in our society back home.

One’s heart sinks on hearing the heinous incidents of crimes against women occurring across our nation, almost every day and every hour. The wrongdoing of blaming women when they become victims of grim circumstances exists primarily due to gender inequality. From the total population of more than one billion, the millions of naïve women and girls, like the protagonists in my story, are agonized due to a million-year-old social inequality that still persists in today’s capitalistic world.

In June 2016, I started penning down this novella, based on a coming-of-age genre, as soon as I boarded the Finnair flight on my way from Helsinki to New Delhi.

And now, the book!

Aparajita is a tenacious go-getter. Her name means unconquerable in Sanskrit, and she lives up to its meaning.

Just like any other ambitious girl, she desires to fulfil her dreams and become an independent individual. Far and wide, the shadow of her melancholy past chases her passage. The fact that her widowed mother is a former sex worker irks the community. Nonetheless, she is not ashamed to reveal her mother’s past.

Will she lose hope, or will she defy an enigma that is centuries-old? Will she ever conquer the hearts of a prestige-obsessed community?

See the world through Aparajita’s prism in a tale stirred by some real

Review – 1857 Dust of Ages – The Forgotten Tale by Vandana Shanker

This has to be the first review on MBB in a very long time and it was well worth the wait. Anyone who likes Indian historical fiction is going to adore this beautiful read.

Maria Perry Mohan’s Review of 1857 Dust of AgesVolume I –  A Forgotten Tale by Vandana Shankar

As historical fiction goes, this is first class. We’re literally getting glimpses of a fascinating story as seen through the eyes of today. Can it really be that an Indian royal family gave their daughter in marriage to a British Army officer?  Some say it could be impossible, but has the truth been covered up? And why?

Those glances back in time show teasing glimpses of a royal family at a crossroads. The queen’s consternation when a male hair has not been born and her greedy sister-in-law, the one who has a son, eyes up the kingdom. Would such a queen mother be good for a kingdom? Probably not.

The princess’s character comes through as a girl who has been born to lead her kingdom. The 19th century produced one of the greatest British monarchs of all time, a queen regnant whose husband was a mere consort. So why couldn’t an Indian state? This intriguing flashback of Indian royal history left me hungry for more. I’m very glad to learn it’s part of a series.

Book Blurb

1857. The rebellion erupts in India. Despite its attempts to stay aloof, NAVGARH, a small town near Delhi, is drawn into the conflagration. And at its heart are Princess Meera and Captain Richard Smith, with their strange alliance made for the throne of Navgarh.

2016, Shiv Sahai, a young Indian art historian and Ruth Aiken, a British scholar discover an excerpt from the journal of an anonymous British soldier, searching for his wife in the chaos of 1857 Delhi. As they begin investigating the scandal, they become aware of the vague rumours that are told in the bylanes of Navgarh – about a princess who married a British soldier to save her kingdom.

Thwarted Escape: An Immigrant’s Wayward Journey by Lopamudra Banerjee – Book Blitz

THWARTED ESCAPE: An Immigrant’s Wayward Journey
by

Lopamudra Banerjee

Blurb

How far can one truly go away from his/her ancestral roots, filial ties and the claustrophobic grip of traditions and the reminiscence of an emotionally fraught childhood and puberty? The book begins with this particular quest, and it is this quest which gains momentum as a woman seeks the essence of herself-identity ten thousand miles away from her Bengali hometown.
With the lens of a time-traveler, her narrative journey encompasses her first sexual abuse, her first tryst with death, austerity, the strangeness of rituals, the inexplicable feelings of puberty and also her surrendering to love, procreation, motherhood. In herself-chosen exile in the US, she discovers that deep within; her ancestral roots are also the wellspring of her psychological, spiritual existence. In the process, she keeps on oscillating between assimilating and disintegrating, which forms the core of her journey.

Guest Post on Author Inspiration: Soulless by MV Kasi

Today, MBB features a guest post by author MV Kasi, on the subject of inspiration. The novel ‘Soulless’ by MV Kasi has recently been released and the author has just completed her blog tour.

MV Kasi, author of ‘Soulless’

Inspiration for ‘Soulless’ by MV Kasi

I don’t really remember the exact inspiration before I started to write this book. I just sat down to start a new book after I had completed my previous novel,’ That Same Old Love’. Initially, it was to be a spin-off for the ‘A Match Made In Hell’ series. But once I had sketched my heroine Sia’s character, I had to stop. I kept thinking about her for a very long time. I knew I couldn’t continue in the same vein as my first book. I couldn’t write Sia’s story as a romantic-comedy. It took me nearly six months to get inside her head and understand her. And once I did, I knew I had to give her a killer story along with an equally awesome complex hero who would complement her. It pushed me out of my comfort zone because I hadn’t actually met someone like Sia in real life. Everything I learned about her was through research. There was a point when I became a little too obsessed with her character. 🙂 So ultimately, my inspiration behind ‘Soulless’ was my lead character, Sia.

Inspiration for earlier work

The inspiration for my other books is varied. ‘That Same Old Love’ was written because I wanted to showcase an imperfect heroine who did not fit the norm of what an ideal girl or woman was expected to be. I wrote ‘The Holiday Affair’ to take a breather after a heavy story like ‘Soulless’.  It is a romantic-comedy with a workaholic female main character falling in love with a most unlikely person. I get inspired by real people and situations around me. Sometimes, I also get inspired by fictional characters or an interesting topic that has caught my attention for a long time. I only hope that I never run out of inspiration. 🙂

‘Soulless’ by MV Kasi

‘Soulless’ by MV Kasi
They say when you take revenge you lose a part of your soul.

But Sia hadn’t felt her soul in a very long time. She only knew crushing fear and helplessness, especially during the nights when she fought and invisible enemy in her nightmares. She spent most of her days desperately trying the gain control of her life while battling her various fears and addictions.
At twenty-three, she’d resigned herself to living the rest of her life fearing the unknown. Until one day, it all changed. Now she knew that the monster from her nightmares was real. She had a strong craving for a swift payback.

But revenge is a dish best served cold. It requires a complete absence of emotion. So she plots and schemes, preparing herself in every possible way to hunt and destroy her enemy. But every mission, however well planned can go awry. Sometimes it’s because even though one can be soulless, there is always the heart. A very weak and desperate heart which is being stolen by a man.

A man who is like a bright spark of vivid color in her otherwise dark and dreary life.

A man who was only supposed to be collateral damage……..

She has a particular interest in successful people who are not considered ‘normal’ by society’s current standards. Her love for reading has led her to start writing her own books. She enjoys adding depth to her characters and exploring their psychological motivations. Due to the nature of her topics and plots, she does not shy away from writing about sexuality or violence. Guest Post – Inspiration Chaos by Sumana Khan, author of ENCOUNTERS – SOMEONE IS ALWAYS WAITING

In my post on inspiration for Encounters (you can read it here), I touched upon the birth of each story. In this post, once again I’ve been asked to give my take on my inspiration for Encounters. So I thought I’ll focus on the sub-title – Someone’s Always Waiting.

This is going to be a nerdy post. I’m sure all of you have heard of Chaos Theory.  For the uninitiated, let’s start off with simple, predictable systems around us. For example, water boils at 100 deg Celsius. Irrespective of the initial temperature of the water – whether it was ice cold, at room temperature or  lukewarm – it reaches boiling point at 100 deg Celsius. That’s a predictable system. If you plot a graph of temperature of the water (y-axis) against time taken to reach boiling point (x-axis), you’ll probably see a neat slanting line, indicating that temperature increases linearly as time spent on the heat increases. This is an observable phenomenon all over the world. It is linear, predictable, and there is no randomness. In general Newtonian physics that is so ingrained in our education and everyday observation largely deals with such predictable systems. Thus, it is termed as deterministic – you are able to determine results based on past conditions. Or, given the present condition, you can deduce the past condition. You know that if you throw something out of the window, it will only go downwards. You can fairly guess how much force you have to exert to move the sofa. You can fairly predict the time you’ll take to get to a place, based on traffic conditions and how fast you can drive. All this gives us a sense of security. A false sense of power over our environment.

However there are systems which are seemingly unpredictable. This is because the outcome of the system is extremely sensitive to the minutest parameters of its initial state. Even minute changes in the initial state of the system can cause disproportionately large results. For example, weather is a dynamic system. Unlike the boiling water, there is no saying two similar cloud patters will have the same results. Cricket. There’s no saying what’s going to happen in the next ball, even if you know the pitch, the swing in the ball, the stance of the batsman. Golf. Same story. Stock market. Same. So all these are nonlinear, dynamic systems. The batsman will not score proportionately increasing runs the longer he stands at the wicket – 2 runs in over 1, 4 in over 2 and so on. The chaos theory pertains to such systems. Mind you, it is not that these events are random – they only appear that way. Underneath all that randomness, they are still governed by laws of physics. It’s just that we are not advanced enough to take into account the million initial states, work out the permutations and combinations and predict accurately. This theory was first proposed by a meteorologist, Edward Lorenz. In 1972, He presented a lecture poetically titled as, “Predictability: Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas?” (You can read it here). Thus, the notion of Butterfly Effect took shape.

I believe our lives are ruled by Chaos Theory. We are constantly facing options, sometimes binary, sometimes too many. Every time we make a choice, our lives are altered minutely. It’s like a massive maze – there are seemingly many paths to the exit.  Sometimes, the chaos is so overwhelming – there is too much noise, too much movement and we feel everything is beyond our control – bad relationships at home, at work, no results and so on. And suddenly, everything quietens up. Everything clicks as if a jigsaw puzzle has been rearranged. Everything makes sense. When we reflect on these episodes, we’ll be able to pinpoint a person, or a place, or a choice we made that set off changes in the right direction. Indeed, a change can also take place simply because one read a story floating on the internet, or heard a moving song. Which makes us question – is anything really random? Perhaps we were meant to meet every single person who came into our life – from close relationships to fleeting acquaintances. Some are pleasant, some unpleasant. But at some point, there is a sense of “it was meant to be.”

It is a notion that I believe strongly in. Consequently, how much ever “useless” or lonely one may feel, I do think there’s always a circuit waiting to be connected – where you find yourself at the doorstep of someone’s life, and knowingly or unknowingly your presence makes it better for them.  At the core of my stories, this is what I set out to explore…my “inspiration”!

Where a story stops, another one begins. The thing with them is, they never walk alone. They always walk with a group of friends. Each reaches its own climax. Then with a final gasp of mortality and despair, fade away. No, they never die, they multiply. To the extent that the original gets lost and new ones are born. Over and over again. Yes, they get lost. No, they never die. They live on, permanently etched in the book of time. And from there, we borrow them and bring them alive. Again. And again. Here are twenty six of them, some standing alone and some chatting up with their long lost friends. When they depart, they leave a lingering fragrance of nostalgia and curiosity. What happened then?
Twenty-six alphabets, twenty-six names, and twenty-six short stories. Each exploring one unique emotion, taking you into the dark recess of the mind. Some frothy and most of them dark. Most standing alone and some facing a mirror, where the same story comes alive in two different ways, through two different protagonist . Meet myriad characters – from the single-minded prostitute to the man on the railways station bereft of any memory; a woman desperate for a biological child to a dead man’s trial. Meet a jealous lover with a twisted brain and a gay man’s memory of a one-night encounter. Meet twenty-six such characters arrested and sentenced for life inside the pages of a book. Each one leaving an indelible mark on your soul.

Abhimanyu – In the Beginning

I felt the poison of anger raging around me, inside me, pulsating like an entity; anger at the one who betrayed and the one who took advantage of this betrayal. The anger of not being able to stop both. Then the flash of knife and the flowing blood, shimmering in the flames of the torches inside the chamber. Screams followed by hushed voices; bodies being dragged down a flight of stairs. The sound of digging and burying. Later, ruins all around as empires fell and one intrigue chased another through time while swords sliced and arrows whiz past, seeking hearts. Who was I and what was all this about? Why were most of the images that flitted through my head always dark and tinged with red? Rarely, very rarely were they warm and loving. So rarely were they, ever like the sun shining on a cold and shivering memory.

good since a Bengali born in UP and reared in Bihar does not make a great Psychologist! Am I now glad to be in tourism? It has taken me all over the world including places you would have never heard of. Eh? How about Tlacotalpan? It’s in Mexico.
Destiny had other plans as well so I became a reluctant healer. A crazy Shaman in Mexico set the ball rolling and it has rolled all the way to Delhi. Today I both heal as well as read Tarot cards. My wife thinks I am mad. My friends think I am weird. I guess I am both.
My first story was published in a magazine when I was seventeen. The Editor made such a hash of it that I stopped sending out my stories but I continued writing. Then I broke my heart and started writing poems; first in Hindi and then in English. All personal collection. They still remain personal. I do shudder when I read some of them! Then the short stories came back and written over two years – now is a collection.

A Dog Eat Dog-Food World

A Fablery Publications

Blurb

A hilarious pseudo-history of marketing management, which explicitly denies resemblance to any actual history, and which will be horrified if some semblance be found. ‘A dog eat dog-food world’ is the story of a man who discovered that the path of life is strewn with treadmills and, if you get on one by mistake, you could keep running all your life to stay in the same place. The story of how just minding your own business can lead to unexpected consequences, guided by the ‘invisible hand’ of long dead economists. Anything you learn from the book – be it the basics of marketing management or a satirical view of Society – you do at your own risk.

The tale only dogs the doings of Spike Fortune who only sought to feed dogs and Jerry Fortune who, being fortuneless, gets dragged helter-skelter by his uncle Spike’s careening pursuit of commercial success; Spike’s rival Tom Rich, who is unwillingly dragged into upstaging Spike and tries to do it by teasing the palates of cats, helped by the bumbling efforts of his nephew, Jasper Rich who would rather be chasing girls than chasing cats.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Fiction has been an addiction but the need to make a living took Suresh through Chemical Engineering and a PGDM at IIM-Bangalore and, from thence, to a long 16 year stint in the area of finance with specific expertise in fertilizer subsidies and a further two years as consulting expert in the same area. That, in his words, about sums up the boring part of his life, except for the people he was privileged to meet.

Otherwise, he can be described as a mess of contradictions – a bookworm but avid trekker; alone but never lonely; enjoys solitude but loves company; lazy but a perfectionist, the litany is endless. Trekking, which side-tracked him from the writing for which he quit his job, is a major passion and he does, at least, one trek in the Himalayas every year in addition to numerous local treks.

He reignited his passion for writing with a fairly popular blog www.jambudweepam.blogspot.in. The blog has been rated among the Top 5 humour blogs in India, twice in succession – in 2014 and 2015 – by BlogAdda, and has also been listed third among the Top Humour Blogs by Baggout.

Spotlight on RIGHT FIT, WRONG SHOE, a new release by Varsha Dixit

Right Fit Wrong Shoe
by
Varsha Dixit
Blurb
Right Fit Wrong Shoe, begins at a point where all love stories end. The tale weaves around Nandini and all that is important to her, with two contenders gunning for the top spot; Aditya Sarin and Sneha Verma.
Aditya Sarin, the man Nandini is madly in love with, yet compelled, for some unsolved reason to shun.  Aditya, on his part, in the past declared Nandini to be a ‘millennium bhehenji (conservative girl)’ and ‘lassi (yoghurt drink) in a wine glass’. Yet he fell for her  . . . hard! However, some mysterious episode caused the lovers to, acrimoniously, part.
Now, Aditya is back in Kanpur,  all his guns blazing (the real and the imagined), determined to devastate her life. Fortunately for the readers, and unfotunately for Aditya, Nandini is determined not to‘bite the dust’ oh so quietly. Wonder, in the battle royal, who wins or who loses it all?
Sneha Verma, the other contender, is Nandini’s BFF, that one friend who knows us better than we do. The one we trust more than Stayfree or Clearasil. Sneha maybe headstrong, hammer fisted and stern mouthed, but for Nandini, she will willingly stand in the path of imminent lightning bolt or a nasty tornado, even if it’s named Aditya Sarin. In standard X, Sneha took Nandini under her wing and that equation hasn’t changed much. Sneha, a recent wife and even more recent mom, appears to be fighting some unknown demons of her own.
Right Fit Wrong Shoe, observes and opinionates the society, affected and amused. It fleetingly touches on issues; fleeting as watching discourses (courtesy Astha Channel), is trendier and quicker, than reading them.
The book is an AAA (anytime, anywhere, anyone) read. It promises to make your day better, and a bad one not any worse.
