TOXIC reviewed – A Novel By Rachel Van Dyken.

Everyone has a secret…

Gabe Hyde is on borrowed time. He’s been hiding his identity for over four years-hidden from the world that used to adore him–obsess over him–driven to the edge of insanity by one poor choice.
But that one choice, altered the course of his life forever.
Pretending isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, especially when pretending means hiding your real self from the people that care about you the most. But if anyone ever discovered the truth it wouldn’t just be his life at risk–but hers.

Saylor doesn’t hate men.

Just Gabe.

Only Gabe.

He’s a reckless, happy-go-lucky, silver spoon fed pain in her ass. Everything about him makes her more and more confused. Unfortunately they both donate time at the same Group Home. If she wasn’t afraid of flunking, she’d be long gone. She hates that she’s attracted to him almost as much as he hates that he’s attracted to her–and she can tell, especially since their first encounter ended up making her knees so weak she couldn’t form coherent sentences for weeks afterwards. But the closer she gets to him, the more confused she becomes. He isn’t who he says he is, and he’s hiding something big.

What happen when two worlds collide? Two worlds that never should have met in the first place? Some secrets are too big to be hidden forever–the only question? Will his destroy everyone he loves? Or finally bring about the redemption he’s been craving for the past four years?

Everyone has a secret…What’s yours?

Meet author Rachel Van Dyken…..

When I was little–I was forced to be the evil step mother, the prince, the ugly stepsister, the dragon with dragon breath (FOR REAL), if there was a villain, I played it.
So really, we can all blame my sister for forcing me to write my own stories. If she hadn’t made me the wicked witch of the West when I was little–I may not be where I am today ;)
I write in every genre, but my passion is New Adult and Historical Romance! I’ve decided that the New Adult bad boy is basically the same thing as a regency rake and one day I will, I WILL write a time travel series that brings both worlds together. It will probably only sell one copy, and that one copy will be bought by my Grandma, but still. A girl can dream ;)
I love wine.
Sunshine.
Butterflies (only the pretty ones, dont judge me)
Coffee
Tattoos
Skipping in the rain
jumping in puddles
Talking to fans
Watching Christmas movies
And Traveling
I’m a hybrid author…so I’m both traditionally published and self published. Sometimes I think i’m crazy because I talk to my characters like they’re real, which, in my head, they are.
I LOVE talking to readers so please hit me up on social media and we can have a nice long chat on why romance novels should take over the world and why the Seahawks deserve to go to the Superbowl.
In 2011 I had my first book published. I cried, jumped up and down, and called everyone I knew!
I can only say I wake up wanting to do nothing but fall to my knees in thanks to God for his many blessings.
I was told one time by a very wise person to sit and think about your childhood. About the dreams that you had, the fantasies you wanted to come to life…by digging in your past it’s often found that you can decide what your destiny is.
I was a prince, a toad, a monster, the evil step-mother, and sometimes the slave girl waiting to be rescued.
So now, I’m an author.

Sounds about right…

Rachel Van Dyken’s TOXIC reviewed by Maria Perry Mohan

Powerful..moving…contemporary…these are just a few words with which I’m trying to describe the book I’ve just read.  Rachel Van Dyken’s TOXIC isn’t so much a read as an experience.  A powerful, moving experience.  So much feeling, so much emotion, several unforgettable characters which stamp themselves indelibly on the mind of a reader.   It’s Gabe’s story.  It’s Saylor’s story too.  You can take your pick, which way you see it.

Gabe could be described in a few short, well chosen words, none of them too flattering.  He cuts a swathe through the women at his college and barely recognises his lovers the next morning.  He looks like the archetypal bad boy, but he can coax heavenly sounds from a piano keyboard.  Saylor’s a nice girl, making her way through college, coming from a somewhat disadvantaged background.  When Gabe and Saylor meet, the sparks fly and not exactly in a positive manner.

But their paths are destined to cross.  And Gabe and Saylor find themselves attracted to each other.  But Gabe has a secret, a truly terrible one.  What will Saylor do when she discovers that he has a fiancée?  To whom he’s devoted until the death?  Well, what would you do?

No, it isn’t an easy read, but heck, I couldn’t leave that book.  Total value for money and it had more affect on my emotions than many a film I’ve seen.  Rachel Van Dyken has been very prolific lately, bringing out books as fast as a reader can read them.  Long may she continue to be so.  I can’t get enough of her immensely readable, human stories.  She had me glued to my e reader.
Just get this book.

TOXIC is dedicated to the memory of Rachel Van Dyken’s uncle, Jobob, who passed away recently.

Rachel Van Dyken with a new release THE WAGER

Rachel Van Dyken, author and book critic, has a new release out, THE WAGER.  It’s the follow up to THE BET, which was a huge hit on the Amazon charts.  Rachel’s output is truly prolific and she writes in the Regency historical genre and the New Adult genre.  She’s been hugely busy with writing and promoting her work lately, as well as dealing with pressing family matters, but I really wanted to take the opportunity to help get the word out about this book, which is as exciting as the first part of this series.  I interviewed Rachel a couple of months ago and I’m taking the opportunity to reprint a  portion of that interview, which you can see below.

What made you decide to write?
I was a school counselor right out of college and also worked for the state as a therapist. Things were stressful to say the least. As a way to de-stress I started writing–and I haven’t stopped since! I always have a story of some kind rolling around in my head. It doesn’t feel like work for me. If anything, I’m angry that I actually need to sleep!

What are your preferred genres for writing and reading?

I really enjoy writing regency romance.  Lately I’ve been writing a lot more New Adult which is a newer genre that just popped up within the last year or so. Historical romance is an escape for me and New Adult is just fun. I don’t know if I could choose between the two.

Could you possibly enlighten me as to what the New Adult genre is?

New Adult books deal with more mature themes, they are books based on characters that are just out of high school and starting college. It’s a more coming-of-age genre. Good examples of authors in this genre are: Jamie Mcguire (Beautiful Disaster), Abbi Glines (Twisted Perfection), Monica Murphy (Second Chance Boyfriend) etc. Most of these books come with warnings so 12 year olds know not to pick them up. They aren’t by any means bad, so I don’t want you to get that impression, they just deal, like I said with  more mature life altering topics. Hope that helps!

Do you write according to a daily target or do you go with the muse, when inspiration hits?

I do both. I like to have a goal of at least 4000 words a day, some days I’ll write 10,000 words, and some days I can only get half of my goal. But I always write something. If I’m stuck I open a different manuscript and write some of that then come back to the one that’s on deadline.

THE WAGER

What is it about a junior-high crush that can send an otherwise intelligent woman into a tailspin? TV reporter Char Lynn wishes she knew. Jake Titus is too rich, too handsome, too arrogant: a trifecta that once lured Char into the best night-and worst morning-after-of her life. Now they’ve been thrown together in a wedding party. It’s awkward, but survivable . . . until Jake stops acting like a jerk, and starts acting like the man she’d always hoped he could be.

If watching your brother marry your best friend is weird, being attracted to your best friend’s other best friend is downright bizarre. Unfortunately for Jake, Char hasn’t forgotten how he once tossed her aside. Worse still, Jake’s already-nutty grandma is even crazier about Char. Cue meet-cute shenanigans and all manner of meddling, and somehow, Jake’s falling. For Char. Now all he has to do is make her believe it . . .

RUIN – New Release from Rachel Van Dyken

Bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken has taken the book world by storm with back to back chart toppers The Bet and Elite. Recently Ms. Van Dyken announced that her beloved uncle Jobob was in his final stage of cancer, which has left his family in debt from medical expenses.

It’s hard to sit back and do nothing–the waiting game is never easy, so Rachel decided to do something and is looking to her fans for support in more ways than one for her next book.Due to be released on August 12, 2013, Ruin is dedicated to her uncle, mother in law, and all cancer survivors and families who have lost loved ones to the disease.

I’m not your typical girl. I’ve been running away from the memories that haunt me for so long that depression has become my only comfort. I was content in the darkness…until Wes Michels offered to be my light.

I didn’t know that time wasn’t my ally — that every second that ticked past was one step closer to the end of something that was beginning to mean the end of myself. He tried to warn me. He promised me all he was able to offer–each moment as it came–but it would never be enough.

Sometimes when you think it’s the end, it’s only the beginning. Wes thought he could save me, but in giving me everything, he ruined me. Because after one kiss, one touch, I couldn’t–I wouldn’t ever be the same.

And from that moment on, his heartbeat became my own.

For the first two weeks Ruin will be priced at $2.99. Proceeds from the sale of Ruin will be donated to Rachel’s uncle and his family to help with the insurmountable medical bills.

How can you help besides buy a copy? Share with friends and family of course!

Meet author Rachel Van Dyken – Giveaway

ANNOUNCEMENT:  The winner of Rachel’s giveaway is Desere

I’m very happy to welcome Rachel Van Dyken to MBB today. Rachel’s one of my fellow reviewers on ROMANCING THE BOOK and she’s also an author in her own right with a prolific output and an impressive backlist.  Her recent release THE BET hit number one in the Amazon (paid) charts recently and was there for a number of days. I had a few question up my sleeve to ask Rachel and she very graciously took time out of her busy schedule to answer them.

Can you describe your book in a tweet sized sentence?
One brother is right for her, one wants to use her. Who will she choose?

What’s next on your agenda?

I’m currently working on the third book in the Seaside Series entitled, “Shatter.” It’s been kind of difficult because I also have another book releasing this month! Somehow it ended up working out that I had a book a month releasing until June….I have no idea why….clearly I need a vacation from my computer 😉 My newest release (this month) is entitled Elite and it’s about a private college with lots of history and dark secrets. I’m really excited about it!
THE BET

“I have a proposition for you…”

Kacey should have run the minute those words left Seattle millionaire Jake Titus’s mouth. Instead, she made a deal with the devil in hopes of putting her past behind her once and for all.

Four days.

She could do four days!

But she wasn’t counting on Jake’s older brother Travis being there to witness their farce of an engagement.

One thing is for certain.

One brother is right for her.

One wants a lifetime.

And one is in league with the devil.

She should have gotten Jake’s signature in blood.
